Martell

With a history that dates back more than three centuries, Martell is one of the oldest and most revered cognac producers in the world. It was founded by Jean Martell in 1715 and the brand grew to become popular with royalty and the upper classes. The Martell family remained as owners until as recently as the 1980s, but the brand is now part of the Pernod Ricard stable.

The making of Martell cognac begins with selecting the best grapes, typically from the Borderies, Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, and Fins Bois regions. These are then fermented into wine, before being double-distilled to remove impurities and create a uniquely clear spirit. This colourless brandy, known as eaux-de-vie, is aged in oak barrels. Martell uses Tronçais oak, which has a finer grain and results in a smoother product.

There are a wide range of Martell cognacs available, starting with the VS, a young and lively spirit with tasty fruity notes – perfect for a cocktail. For something older, try the VSOP, or the Martell Blue Swift, which takes the VSOP and finishes it in Kentucky barrels. Looking for an extra special offering? Cordon Bleu is Martell’s flagship bottling and is one of the best-selling premium cognacs on the market. Introduced in 1912, it is an iconic expression that was served at George V’s coronation.
